A few
of the 50 students who attended
Thanks to an invitation from Broadwater School, Prozac and
Kerbie volunteered their time to stage a grass roots workshop
as part of the schools activity week.
Two one hour workshops in the stifling heat of July 19th (the
U.K.s hottest July day on record) attracted 50 students, most
of whom had very limited or no experience in the fundamentals
of Parkour.
After a short briefing session about the history of Parkour,
Kerbie started the sessions with a 5 minute warm-up (as if
the students needed warming up even more). This was followed
by an introduction to developing good role technique.
Once satisfied the students had grasped the principle of the
role, the trainers moved on to vaults (Passement)
and underbars (Franchissement)
culminating in a short course using the gyms apparatus.
It was amazing to see how many students who initially lacked
confidence started to develop a new awareness of what their
bodies could actually do and how far they could push themselves
outside their comfort zones. This was particularly true for
the girls who made up approx 40% of the attendees.
| "It
gave a tremendous boost to the student's confidence and
made them all realise that they could achieve much more
than they thought" Liz Eves |
Both Prozac and Kerbie were ever mindful to work with the
students individual capabilities and ensure that whatever
their standard, they only pushed their boundaries when they
felt completely confident to do so.
It was obvious that a few of the students already possessed
some really good PK skills and many stuck around well after
the sessions had finished to get some more 'one on one' with
their coaches.
The enthusiasm of the students was fantastic and such was
the success of the workshops, that Broadwater has invited
Worldwide JAM to consider staging the tutorials on a regular
basis.
"It gave a tremendous boost to the student's confidence
and made them all realise that they could achieve much more
than they thought" said Liz Eves, Activity Week Co-Ordinator,
Broadwater School.
Worldwide
JAM would like to thank Linda Goldsmith, Fiona Spena and Liz
Eves from Broadwater for making us so welcome. They even offered
us free school dinners....unfortunately a prior engagement
suddenly came up!!!!
